Blur Beta Impressions

The Blur beta is out and will it live up to and expectations that Bizzarre is known for? Click Read More to find out.

So I have had the joy of playing Bizarre's latest creation, Blur, and I have to say they have done very well. This may just be a beta but its still just as fun as possibly a whole game. So if you think that Mario Kart and Burnout had a demented child this is what you would get. Like in Mario Kart you get your power ups off the ground by driving through them, you can only hold three at a time but your able to drop what ever one you want so you can get a something else. In the beta I got to play with eight of the fun little power ups. Most of them are for just pure carnage but others will fix your car or make you have a temporary boost. The power ups that you are able to get are:
  •  Shock - This will cause three EMP fields to just spawn right out in front of whoever is leading the race. What these will do is that whenever they are hit the person that is hit will slow down significantly giving the other racers the chance to catch up. They are not that easy to dodge sometimes either.
  • Mine - Mines are a pain in the ass, I've hit my fair share, most of the time they place them right where everyone drives through and are near imposable to actually miss and they will spin you out of control in no time allowing every one to just pass you by. But there is a way around that by just shooting them with either a Barge or Bolt blast, it can be countered though by the shield that surrounds your car( I'll get to that later).
  • Barge - This is a close range attack that will knock anyone around you away and do some nice damage. I found this to be handy when I got close to the leader at the end of the race to knock him out of the way so I could take the win.
  • Bolt - What this consists of is only three shots that you can fire forwards or backwards at someone that is riding your ass.
  • Shunt - Alright now this is the big gun that's in the beta. What this will do is if there is some one in front of you or behind you this will home in on them and just strait up kick their ass. There are only two ways of not being hit by this one dodge and weave and the other is shoot it with something. The best way to not be hit is to have the shield but it can only block one of these.
  • Nitro - This is just a basic boost but has an extra function and that would be to just about stop on a dime. That's right you can hold down on the left stick and use this and it will act like an air brake and slow you so you can just do one hell of a brake check or you can dodge some thing or just slowdown to take a turn.
  • Shield - Well here it is, the shield. What this baby can do is block any thing that's thrown at you, and I mean anything.
  • Repair - What this will do is completely repair your car to new so you can keep dishing out the pain with out worrying about being blown up by someone else.
There is a level up system within the game, here in the beta the level cap is 10 and its easy to get to. They way that you gain points to level up is with fans, you gain fans buy doing nice drifts blowing up other players and just driving good; also winning is another factor to getting ,more fans.

In the beta there are only an handful of events that you are able play in, and a few you will have to unlock by leveling, don't worry leveling easy. Skirmish racing is just and intense race between 2-10 players but if you want the really intense race play Powered-Up Extreme racing, that's where there is 4-20 players on one track racing for the win with cars getting knocked all over the place, it's just pure carnage but fun as hell. Supercar racing is just for the Class A cars, there are car Classes in the game and they are not that difficult to understand. Now Motor Mash is just a destruction derby with power ups, what you have to do here to win is you have to have to most damage inflicted to other players. It;s a fun concept and with those power ups it makes one hell of a destruction derby.

From what I've seen so far with the beta this may be one of those sleeper hits that only a few people like but it's still a good game. I'm looking forward to the full release of this one. Also I didn't mention this earlier but this will also be going old school with four player split screen, so you and your friends can blast each other with cars on the same couch.
